  Wesley Clark poll data released

The draftwesleyclark folks have commissioned a poll by Zogby to assess the viability of a Clark bid for the presidency. Of note:

* Clark comes in first in a blind-bio match-up versus six key Democratic candidates (Dean, Kerry, Edwards, Lieberman, Gephardt, Edwards, and Graham)
* Clark wins 49.4 percent to 40.2 percent in a blind-bio match-up versus President Bush among a national poll of likely voters

"...the poll results tell us that Clark has the qualities to compete against the elite of the Democratic field, and to challenge and potentially defeat President Bush in 2004."

Moe. to offer their music via WiFi

As seen on jambands.com:

moe. has announced that it will be offering fans high-quality digital audience recordings at this year’s moe.down, slated for Labor Day Weekend in Turin, NY. The event will feature an audio file server with both ethernet and Wi-Fi connections for those that bring laptop computers. The server will feature archived recordings - in both MP3 and SHN format - from past moe.downs as well as this year’s performances, which will be available within a few hours of each show. All downloads are free of charge.

For technical questions, contact shoop@moe.org. Complete festival details are available at www.moe.org.

So, basically, bring your laptop and wifi connection to their festival and leave with everything you heard. Along with Phish and its livephish service, Moe. is now leading the music industry by offering music, not only free of DRM, but also now directly available using 802.11. Those in the open-source world should start drawing strong parallels between open-source code and open-access to music. Are "jam bands" to music what GNU is to software?

Separately, imagine if they were streaming music live rather than a couple hours afterwards for a small charge and you brought a wifi enabled handheld with you. It seems to me that this is the future of a making money on music in the internet age.

wesley clark, howard dean -- the next president, vice president (or vice versa)

Checking my referrer logs, I just discovered I'm the second google result returned for "Wesley Clark Howard Dean" (or vice versa). Meet the Press today was talking quite seriously about the Clark campaign as it appears Washington insiders are almost sure his hat is going into the ring.

Further, I just learned from the Wesley Clark blog that apparently the Dean and Clark camps are already talking to each other. Great news to me (though I think Clark is the more electable president than Dean). These two in combination, I believe, are set to roll over Bush. Here's the key:

* Push for the UN takeover of operations in Iraq
* Make an issue out of the current state of affairs in Afghanistan
* Huge deficts / Fiscal irresponsibility of the tax cuts (burdens put on state's budgets)

Red Hat releases new 2.4.20-20.9 kernel

Here's the errata advisory for the 2.4.20-20.9 errata kernel now available from Red Hat to fix "obsure" bugs. Much respect goes to Robert Hentosh and Matt Domsch of Dell whom I both work with for diagnosing and fixing these race conditions. They don't mention this errata should likely also help fix large memory support for RH9.

DKMS article in Sept Linux Journal

I have a 4 page piece about DKMS in this month's Linux Journal. The article can be found here online, but requires a paid subscription to Linux Journal. Go pick a copy up at your local bookstore.

ACL Fest schedule grid is up (also, let's all cry for TicketMaster)

The time schedule for the Austin City Limit's Festival has been posted. There are a couple hard choices to be made, but overall I'm pumped.

Also, in regard to String Cheese Incident's lawsuit against TicketMaster, TM has come back in response. Let me tell you how bad I feel for Ticketmaster. Good thing they don't own the rights to Zilker Park.

  ChangeBlog: DKMS 0.33.02

DKMS version 0.33.02 is now available (tarball or RPM):

* Add /var/dkms/dkms_dbversion to track the versioning of the underlying database structure used in DKMS. This is currently set at 1.00.

* Fixed bugs in match which was causing it to fail when matching against multiple modules.

* Added Fred Treasure to the author's list for his SuSE/UL work.

  SCI sues TicketMaster

This one is filed under "rights" and not "music" for good reason. The String Cheese Incident, a jam-band set to play at the Austin City Limits Festival, has initiated a lawsuit against TicketMaster. Apparently, TM wants to end the practice of venues selling blocks of tickets directly to artists so it can wrestle control of every last drop of the market. SCI has made a good business of selling their tix directly to their fans (as well as helping other like-minded bands do the same) and TM wants this no more. Of course, SCI aren't the first to sue TM, but lets just hope they meet with more success. What an abusive monopoly.

  flash mob idea update

I'm at LinuxWorld right now, but based on the suggestions that keep rolling in on my previous flashmob blog entry, it seems like the concensus idea which I like the best is to coordinate something outside the new Cheesecake Factory in the Arboretum. I happen to like this idea just because I never understood the hype behind these restaurants-- really, to me, I find it rather horrid to have to wade through advertisements on my menu as well as the room itself is a glorified cafeteria with columns to distract you from this fact.

Anyway, people seem to flock regardless and I never quite got it. The irony is that where now sits another "Something for Everyone!" cookie-cutter corporate dining experience, the previous tenant was the independent movie theater, Arbor 7. Wouldn't it be appropriate if we all randomly showed up doing such things as asking the Factory hostess for directions to the Arbor 7, showtimes for your favorite indie movie, or, perhaps, their opinions on the cinematography in Waking Life?

That movie made me nervous. I'm sure the hostess will be too. Thoughts?

  enjoying San Francisco

Walked half way across the city from the beach through Golden Gate park up through Haight/Ashbury only to make it back to the hotel to find the Reds/Giants game on from Cincinnati. Life is good.

The Reds aren't.
